Rules and restrictions in selling

What you need to know

As an eBay seller, your account will have specific selling limits. These limits depend on factors like your selling history, behavior, and the category of items you list.

There are also restrictions on eBay, so make sure your item is allowed and complies with regional laws. Certain items are prohibited or restricted by law, while others are specifically not permitted under eBay’s policies.

eBay's selling limits

Selling limits

Selling limits help you grow your business and provide great service. As you meet buyer demand, your limit will increase. Check your limit anytime in Seller Hub.

Zero insertion fee listings

Zero insertion fee listings include up to 250 listings without you being charged for their insertion. Use this to understand the platform and research demand for your items. With a Basic or higher eBay Store, you get more zero insertion fee listings than non-subscribers.

Category limits

If you're new to a category, eBay may limit how much you can sell. Once you have a good track record, most category limits will be removed, though other limits may still apply based on the categories you list.

How it works

All new eBay sellers have a selling limit and Zero insertion fee listings.

Selling limits are unique for each selling account based on various factors, such as selling performance and behaviours or the risk associated with the types of items listed on an account. You will have a limit of items and their total value to list and/or sell. If you have reached one of these criteria, you will have to wait until next calendar month to list more items or to request a limit increase.

To check your selling limits

  1. Go to the Overview tab of Seller Hub.
  2. Scroll down and find the Monthly limits section to view your current limit.

If your selling performance and sales metrics are strong, you may be able to have your limits increased.

The number of zero insertion fee listings per month is not related to the account's selling limit.

If you are registered on ebay.com, you receive 250 zero insertion fee listings per month. This means you won't be charged insertion fees for these listings. However, you still need to pay a final value fee when your item sells. You'll also be charged fees for optional listing upgrades and supplemental services if you choose to use them.

Prohibited and restricted items on eBay

If you’re new to eBay, it’s important to know that not all items are allowed to be listed. Some categories of products are either prohibited or restricted due to safety concerns or legal regulations. Before creating a listing, make sure your item complies with eBay policies and any specific conditions that apply.

Why eBay imposes these restrictions

To ensure the safety of the community and to comply with local laws, eBay restricts or prohibits the listing of certain items.
